The Mother See strongly condemns the consistent destruction of Artsakh’s spiritual and cultural heritage by the Azerbaijani authorities. The Azerbaijani authorities have razed to the ground the St. Hakob Church in Stepanakert and the khachkars and monuments in the surrounding area, which, according to Azerbaijani sources, were allegedly illegal structures subject to dismantling. The Mother See also considers the information received about the destruction of the Mother Cathedral of the Holy Mother of God in Stepanakert as extremely worrying. Holy Etchmiadzin calls on the Head of the Armenian government to take urgent and effective steps to prevent the systematic appropriation and destruction of Artsakh’s spiritual and cultural heritage.
 

Citizens Organize Signature Collection for the Freedom of Archbishop Mikayel Ajapahyan


Thousands of citizens at the Gyumri Holy Mother of God Seven Wounds Church have joined the signature collection initiated for the freedom of Archbishop Mikayel Ajapahyan and submitted a written application to the court. They claim that the continued imprisonment of the Archbishop negatively affects the believers of the Shirak Diocese, and thereby limits their constitutional right to satisfy their religious needs. It has been nine months since the head of the Shirak Diocese, Archbishop Mikayel Ajapahyan, has been in prison. His Eminence is deprived of the opportunity to perform spiritual services and deal with the affairs of the diocese.
