At the suggestion of the Catholicos of All Armenians, the World Council of Churches organized an international conference in Switzerland entitled “Religious Freedom: Preservation of the Armenian Spiritual, Cultural and Historical Heritage in Artsakh.” The Catholicos of All Armenians stated at the conference that with the military support of Turkey, Azerbaijan has committed a crime: it has occupied and completely depopulated Artsakh. It has seized significant territories of vital importance to Armenia’s border, and is presenting new demands in the process of signing a peace treaty. Azerbaijan is holding Artsakh’s political leaders, civilians and prisoners of war hostage, conducting a show trial against them, in flagrant violation of international legal norms. The Secretary General of the World Council of Churches stated that Christians are called to be witnesses to the truth, and this means standing with the victims and speaking out against evil.
