It was a wedding day, and ten virgins took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom. Five of the virgins were wise, and five were foolish. The wise took jars of oil with their lamps, but the foolish did not. The bridegroom was late, and the virgins fell asleep. At midnight a cry was heard, “Behold, the bridegroom is coming; go out to meet him.” Then the virgins went out and trimmed their lamps. Because the foolish virgins had taken no oil, their lamps began to go out. So they asked the wise virgins for oil. The wise virgins replied, “Perhaps there will not be enough for us and you; go instead to the merchants and buy some for yourselves.” While they were going to buy oil, the bridegroom arrived. The virgins who were ready went in with him to the wedding banquet, and the door was shut. Then the other virgins came and said, “The bridegroom is coming, and the bridegroom is coming.” "Lord, Lord, open the door." And the bridegroom answered, "Truly I tell you, I do not know you."
