Armenian Commercial Capital in the 17-18th Centuries

Based in News Julfa, Armenian merchants operated a network of commercial settlements stretching from London to Mediterranian and coasts of Indian Ocean. How did the Armenian merchants manage to accumulate huge capital, what was the mechanism that had their international network running? And most importantly, what were the causes of such capital to perish?
